My approach to helping young children encompasses understanding their world and their unique perspectives. As a family therapist, I find it helpful to engage the entire family in the session. This may include parents, step-parents or grandparents that are acting as primary caretakers. During the session, all family members are encouraged to participate. I engage children who lack verbal skills through games and play. This reduces anxiety for the child and promotes a therapeutic connection. Using play as a means of getting parents and children to express their feelings can supplement talk therapy and may accelerate the progress toward client driven goals.
