Young children treatment interventions very often involve parents and caretakers at some point. Disruptive Behavior Problems are most prevalent, specifically Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD), however fear, anxiety social issues also rank highly. In my practice, I use behavior therapy (parent management training), both individual and group cognitive behavioral therapy as well as multisystemic therapy. MST is goal-oriented and focuses on helping the caregivers manage and nurture their challenging children more effectively. As your child's therapist I become intimately involved in every aspect of their life and social network including peers, school and family.

I have over 7 years experience working with children who suffer from family problems, ADD and learning disability diagnoses, and behavior problems. Working with the family as a whole, I have seen significant improvement in areas of functioning when the child is treated in relation to the family and everyone involved. I work collectively with schools, physicians and other personnel involved in the child's life to create a way for the child to live optimally without any hinderances.

I believe children are very intelligent and know exactly what they need, but they often don't know how to communicate that. As a result, they may act out or in, create unhealthy symptoms, and begin to feel all alone. Through play therapy, I help children find their voice, learn to express feelings and identify needs appropriately, and learn healthy coping skills. I also work with the family, to set boundaries that support their child/children in the growth and progress they are making. As the child changes, so does the family. Growth happens with everyone, and life is never the same.

Small children aged 3 to 8 typically do not participate in family therapy because the vast majority of therapists consider such children too young to articulate their feelings or understand complex patterns of behavior. Butler thinks otherwise, as she perfects her skills using an approach called narrative therapy. Often described as “post-modern,” narrative therapy allows clients to put away old, tired versions of the stories they tell themselves [and everybody else] about their lives. Playing more to the clients’ strengths than their weaknesses, the approach urges clients to see themselves as much more than the presenting problem and to identify ways in which they are already taking steps

One of the most useful tools that I use in working with young children and their parents are behavior modification plans or also known as token economy. Behavior modification plans can be implemented with various problem areas a child may be facing. Some problem areas could be motivation, hygeine, ADHD, and defiance. These are to name only a few. I work closely with the family and child to see a productive outcome.

I've worked with young children from the age of 2 through teenage years. For several years I worked as a pre-school teacher, later as a therapist for the Children's Home Society dealing with adoption and foster care children, and spent years in a local middle school working with a multi-cultural adolescent population facing a multitude of situations. I've found art therapy to be effective, and our work often results in increased self-esteem.

I help children process their emotions through play and other proven therapies. If your child has experienced an emotional upset, trauma or difficulty, I provide a safe, neutral and supportive environment for them to express their feelings and become "regulated." Their behavior will shift and they will cope with their feelings and circumstances in a new and positive way. I have worked extensively with at-risk children in the most stressful circumstances. Through play therapy, behavioral therapy and other evidence based techniques, I can assist your child with a wide range of problems, behaviors and disorders, as well as providing parenting support and education.
