Having taught elementary school for over eighteen years, and raising two children of my own, I feel that I can establish a good rapport with young children. Talk therapy with young children is too intense, so I usually work with them using play therapy techniques. I love the honesty and openness with which children can often "tell it like it is." I prefer to work with children ages five and up.

Too often therapies are not targeted at children's age levels. I specialize in play therapy with young children. Play therapy is an opportunity for children to express feelings, emotions or trauma in a safe environment. Developmentally, children are not able to adequately express their feelings or experiences in words. Through play therapy, the therapist can interact and help the child to express and heal important feelings related to their experiences. I have specialized doctoral clinical training in play therapy and child therapy. I have found play therapy, combined with family therapy, to be an effective technique to help children with anxiety, trauma, depression, and behavioral problems.

I work with 12 year olds and up. For young teens we use games, pillow fights, exercise, drawing, any medium that would make it more comfortable for the teen to open and share. When beneficial, I bring the parents into the end of the session so that they know what the teen is needing in their assistancxe with that next week. Art and journaling are a significant part of homework to allow the youth to express and reduce their emotional overload.

I am a Registered Play Therapist. Counseling children is different than working with adults. Children have not yet developed the areas of their brain associated with language and communication that adults use in typical "talk therapy" counseling. Play is the language of children, and through their play they are able to process their problems, such as divorce, loss of a loved one, behavior problems, trauma, anxiety, depression, or other difficult situations. Because play therapy is at a child's level, it is less invasive and less threatening. Children might not even have the words, thoughts or feelings to verbalize their experiences. Child Counselor Newport Coast
Angela Wu, LCSW

Psychotherapist - Licensed Clinical Social Worker
  Email: Contact Angela
  17772 Irvine Blvd., Suite 201, Tustin 92780
Angela's approach with children involves play and art to address any emotional or behavioral problems. Young children do not have the words to describe what's wrong and usually cannot explain why they feel the way they do, or act the way they do. They do not fully understand what's going on and may not yet have learned effective ways to deal with worry, fears, sadness, anger, and stress. Angela's gentle approach with children assists with the healthy expression of thoughts and feelings, and learning and practice of new coping and social skills. She also works with the parents and family members to help support the child at home and continue healthy habits.
