The Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) recognizes that gifted children have specific academic needs that have to be met. As a result, NMUSD has developed and implemented the Gifted and Talented Education Program for students in grades 4-12. Students engage in regular curriculum activities, which are then differentiated based on each student's ability. In particular, the growth of critical thinking skills, problem solving skills and creativity is emphasized. The social and emotional needs of gifted students are also addressed with in-class activities. Programs vary slightly, so parents of gifted children should direct inquiries to their child's school.4
