Sorrow can immobilize life. It binds our hearts, hands and feet and although we may try desperately to ignore it, grief hangs like a heavy wet cloak. Wanting to toss this heavy cloak of loss aside, the idea of welcoming sorrow seems out of the question. Yet the only way to lighten its burden is to dive into its mystery and try to understand it. When we sing our sorrows we give them wings. We find, as the poet Wendell Berry says, “That the dark, too, blooms and sings.” Neither ignoring sorrow, nor dwelling in its seductive grasp will make it go away. In working with clients who are dealing with loss, we start by giving it the type of attention it deserves so we can send it on its way.

Grief and loss are lonely events. Often we do not express the true depth of pain to our loved ones as a way of caring or protecting them. As your therapist, I can handle the full breadth of your grief. I will also help you go through the stages of grief in as meaningful a way as possible. I will provide education and information about these normal stages and I will suggest helpful interventions to ease the way.

I work a great deal with trauma issues. I consider trauma a loss. I offer EMDR therapy for trauma and loss issues and trauma for veterans. Patients who have suffered for years from anxiety or distressing memories, nightmares, insomnia, abuse or other traumatic events can now gain relief from a therapy called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing). Research shows that EMDR is rapid, safe and effective. EMDR does not involve the use of drugs or hypnosis. It is a simple, non-invasive patient-therapist collaboration in which healing can happen effectively. Many patients who have made slow progress in the past benefit greatly with EMDR.

Any loss is a shock to ourselves. Whether it is losing a loved one, a job, a house, a connection with someone, a form of well-being or functioning. Allowing yourself to grieve and learning how to grieve can create a much bigger path in your grieving experiences. Knowing the stages of grief and identifying how they relate to you and affect you while having an empathic therapist, will help you in this difficult time.

My approach to grief counseling involves helping clients to explore the complicated nature of their loss in order to fully embrace this reality. I believe that by exploring this pain, with support and collaboration, clients are able to sort through their circumstances to discover what is still left in their lives. It is then possible to explore all that life can hold in the future.

My grief and loss work takes on many shapes. Most often I work with grief and loss as it pertains to lifecycle transitions. I work with clients to honor the phase of life they are exiting, may it be an age milestone, ending of a relationship or marriage, children leaving home, and new parents, as examples. I help clients mourn the loss of a past life and explore what the transition and new life may bring.

Most of us have never been taught how to grieve. Successfully grieving a loss in one's life, whether large or small, is essential in order to remain healthy and move forward in life. As a humanist, I believe that people are most able to heal in an environment that is safe, highly supportive and free of judgment.
