Mental Health in West Hollywood
West Hollywood is a socially progressive city with a large population of LGBTQ residents. West Hollywood has the third-highest rate of same-sex couples in California, with approximately 1,400 households in the city headed by gay or lesbian couples. Despite making many gains in recent years, LGBTQ individuals still face much discrimination and inequality. As a result, comprehensive support services are needed to help this community achieve equality.2
Individuals in West Hollywood who need a helping hand can depend on the Assistance League of Los Angeles for a variety services. Operation School Bell provides new school clothes for 5,000 impoverished kids each year. Family-based services include crisis intervention, domestic violence prevention, and substance abuse programs. The Assistance League also supports children who are entering the foster care system. Sometimes children are removed from their family home with little notice, and leave behind most of their belongings. Clothing and supplies are provided to children in those situations so they are prepared for school. For additional information about these programs and services, call 323-469-1973.3
Current Initiatives
The L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center participates in the Vote for Equality Initiative, which seeks to organize communities to approve measures for LGBTQ equality. Volunteers work throughout the greater Los Angeles area to develop and implement programs that educate voters about LGBTQ issues. Additionally, volunteers engage in direct contact with voters by going door-to-door and holding seminars. Programs to reduce anti-gay sentiment are also implemented as part of the program. For more information or to volunteer, call 323-860-7352.4
