When you are going through a loss or grieving the death of someone you love it may seem like talking about it won't help. It won't bring the person back but having a caring and compassionate person to talk to about it does bring comfort. Many times the people we would usually lean on in tough times are going through their own grief, which is why therapy can help.

When dealing with grief and loss, it is important to hold space for the pain that comes with this type of experience. Too often, we are told that we need to "just get over it" without fully understanding and processing the experience. Letting go is not something that happens overnight, and it is never the goal of our work together. Instead we find ways to honor the experience and find gratitude for the ways in which it has enriched our lives. The ultimate goal is to gain a greater understanding for why we had to go through the pain and ultimately find a sense of peace and healing.

As an experienced Christian Counselor and ordained pastor, I’ve supported many men through the grief process. If you’re grieving, I will provide a supportive space for you to process your emotions. Because grief is a normal part of being human, I can’t take it away or rush you through it. However, I can help you identify barriers to grief, and help you prevent the grief process from becoming stuck. I know grief professionally. But I also know grief personally. Losing one of my best friends and my beloved grandparents was hard enough, but facing the untimely death of my father was, and is, a uniquely painful experience. Everyone feels Grief & Loss deeply and profoundly at some time or other in life. I don't believe grief is something that needs to be "gotten over." Instead, I encourage you to learn to be curious about how profound the connection is that is causing the psychic pain. Oftentimes, lingering in that experience provides substantial understanding and relief.

Grief doesn't follow a schedule, and it doesn't always look like sadness. It can show up as anger, numbness, guilt, or even relief, and any of it is valid. Losing someone or something significant can shake your entire sense of self and purpose. I work with grieving clients using a combination of CBT, EMDR, and somatic approaches to help you process what you're carrying, at whatever pace feels right. We'll work through the hard emotions, find ways to honor what you've lost, and rebuild a sense of meaning. Healing from grief isn't about moving on. It's about learning to carry it differently.

Like many professionals I am astounded that psychiatrists have added grief to their huge list of "disorders." We all grieve differently and at a different pace. Like a physical wound, grief cannot be rushed or "cured." The best we can do is to keep the emotional wound clean, dry, and freshly bandaged, then watch the passage of time work its miracle.

Grief counseling helps people cope with grief and mourning following the loss of a loved one or due to major life changes that trigger feelings of grief (i.e. job loss or divorce). It provides a space for individuals to work through and process the complex emotions surrounding loss. Healthy grieving results in remembering the loss with a newfound sense of peace, rather than searing pain.
