I have found that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, in conjunction with homework assignments, is very helpful in overcoming various forms of depressive disorders. I often recommend the work of Judith Beck and David Burns who have written excellent texts and workbooks on overcoming depression by becoming aware of the association of negative thoughts (ie. I am never good enough) and negative emotions (ie. depression, hopelessness, despair, anger, panic). My practice is to take a personal history of the best and worst moments in life and then discuss the impact of these events on the human Limbic Brains.
