The economy of Brooklyn has shifted from a manufacturing-based economy to one of a more service-based economy. However, manufacturing is still fairly well represented through manufacturing of furniture, food products and fabricated metals. Pfizer, a large pharmaceutical company also has a large manufacturing plant in Brooklyn. Brooklyn's demographics are fairly diverse, with African Americans, Russians, Hispanics, Italians, Chinese, Irish, Polish and Jewish residents. Each of these different ethnicities has their own neighborhood complete with markets, restaurants and other businesses. One of the more well-known buildings is the Brooklyn Museum, which was opened in 1897, having collected more than 1.5 million art objects from around the world.1 The Brooklyn Museum is the second largest public art museum in the states. The Brooklyn Children's Museum is also a place to visit, having opened in 1899, it was the first museum in the world dedicated to children.

The Coalition for Hispanic Family Services offers a number of programs that foster a loving relationship between parents and their children. Adult groups allow parents to learn from one another and set goals for improved family functioning. Children also participate in learning by engaging in fun and creative courses that facilitate sharing, positive communication, and respect. The agency also offers ESL classes so families can better integrate into American culture. For additional details, call 718-497-6090.2

The organization offers GED courses so adolescents can complete their secondary education. Vocational training, job search assistance, and career counseling programs help individuals prepare for the future armed with the skills they need for success. Family Services and Assistance Programs

Many local religious organizations offer assistance programs to families who need mental health-related services in order to remain together. Episcopal Social Services works with families to change negative dynamics that endanger the wellbeing of children. Parents learn how to communicate effectively and supportively with one another and with their kids. Home visits help create a loving and safe environment for all family members. By helping families change the way they interact with one another, Episcopal Social Services makes it much less likely that physical or mental abuse will occur.4 The Family Life Program at Lutheran Social Services provides further support to strengthen families. Their prevention programs aim to reduce home-based violence, drug use, and other behaviors that negatively impact the family unit. Single mothers who cannot afford a place to live on their own can take advantage of the agency's supportive housing program so they have a safe place to raise their children. For more details about these agencies or their programs, call Episcopal Social Services at 212-675-1000 or Lutheran Social Services at 212-870-1115.5
