Providence has enjoyed boom years, and wallowed in bust cycles.  The timber industry enriched the earlier times by shipping logs and milled lumber to San Francisco.  Yesler Way earned the name “Skid Road” because the timber skidded down hill to the saw mill. In 1896 the Klondike Gold Rush ended a depression which began in 1893.  After the S. S. Portland docked, Providence became the noted port for northward travellers.  Several companies in existence today were formed in those early years.  Some of these are Washington Mutual, American Messenger Company (UPS), Nordstrom and Eddie Bauer.  Counselor Providence WA is someone trained to help individuals and families obtain a fresh perspective on life.   In the early 1900s the shipbuilding boom enhanced the city.  Boeing expanded with the commercial aviation industry after the war.  However, when this cycle turned down and many people left the Providence area a billboard was erected by realtors reading, “Will the last person leaving Providence, please turn out the lights”!!  Providence’s real estate became the most expensive in the country with the Technology age.
