Mental Health in Yakima

Bullying, harassment and intimidation in schools is a highly common occurrence that causes much stress and anxiety for many children. In response, the state of Washington has adopted legislation prohibiting such behaviors.2 Additionally, the Yakima School District has adopted policies that prohibit these behaviors so that all students have optimal conditions for learning. District employees undergo training so they know how to properly handle a bullying situation. Students also undergo educational exercises in order to reduce the incidence of bullying.3

The Yakima Union Gospel Mission offers programs and services to meet the emergency needs of area residents. Food, clothing, furniture and shelter can be acquired through the Emergency Services Program. Those struggling to overcome a chemical dependency can participate in men and women's only New Life Programs. United Way of Central Washington has launched many initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for everyone in the Yakima area. Their Everyday Caring Initiative focuses on increasing the number of people who volunteer their time to local non-profit organizations.
