Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Charleston

Charleston and Kanawha County residents tend to be stable and well-to-do, with a majority of households being established families.2 Yet over 40 percent of married couples in Charleston with children less than 5 years of age are living below the poverty line.3 This is due in part to lack of access to fair wages, quality education, and proper health care for some residents, and takes a serious toll on the mental health of these families.

The West Virginia Bureau of Senior Services provides many support programs for elderly individuals and their families. Educational materials regarding health and physical fitness are available, as is access to mental health information. If you or an elderly loved one has questions about Medicaid and other senior services, the Bureau of Senior Services can provide help. Legal aid is offered, as is long-term ombudsman service. For further details about these and other programs, call 304-558-3317.4

Family Services and Assistance Programs

The Kanawha County Department of Health and Human Resources offers assistance programs to families in need. From childcare subsidies to SNAP Food Stamps to emergency assistance and access to adequate health care, the Department of Health and Human Resources seeks to stabilize families and ensure they have the services they need to live optimally. Additionally, the department offers burial assistance to families that cannot afford to bury a deceased loved one. Recipients of Medicaid qualify for transportation assistance, and those that cannot afford to pay their utilities can apply for subsidies in order to keep their homes heated and cooled. For immediate help, contact the Kanawha County office at 304-746-2360.5
