Choosing a therapist is huge decision given the consequences that are usually involved. So, how can you really tell? if a therapist can help you or a family member? Don't all therapists describe themselves as understanding, kind, experienced and helpful? So, how can you really tell? Well, reviewing credentials is one way: I'm a board certified doctoral level psychologist (in order to earn board certification, which is indicated by the ABPP credential, I needed to pass an all day oral examination by three senior psychologists). I'm also a fellow of the American Psychological Association (< 6% of psychologists achieve this national level credential), the Pennsylvania Psychological Association and the American Academy of Clinical Psychology.

You might also consider a therapist's peer endorsements: I am a former president of the Pennsylvania Psychological Association (an elected position within the second largest state psychological association in the country); I've also won three national awards, a state award and numerous university awards for my professional work.

You could also learn some things by reviewing a therapist's work products that require professional review or screening: I've authored two books, published dozens of professional articles and book chapters, completed hundreds of media projects (e.g., NPR, O Magazine, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, Associated Press, LA Times), given hundreds of invited workshops and keynote addresses across the country and do ongoing free public education through my blog, my YouTube channel and my Twitter feed. But, as there are other qualifications that might be important to you, I've put a link to my CV here; moreover, a link to FAQs about my practice can be found here.

My primary areas of specialization are the problems most commonly faced by kids, teens and couples. However, I also help adults overcome depression, anxiety, ADHD and a variety of self-defeating behaviors. Finally, I frequently do forensic evaluations, various kinds of psychological testing and consultation and integrate the findings from positive psychology into my clinical work.

Bottom line? These are the six words and terms that I keep in the front of my mind when I practice: kindness, thoroughness, truth, empathy, scientific credibility and transformational results.
