Providing Expertise Marriage, Family and Individual Counseling for over 15 years

Located in Schaumburg, IL, The Lighthouse is the first and only emotional wellness center of its kind established in the Midwest in 2002, founded by Dr Ray & Jean Kadkhodaian. We are a family practice dedicated to you, your marriage and your family.

Seeking counseling is a very vulnerable thing to do and sometimes difficult to admit. It is a personal business that demands personal attention. Especially when the happiness of your marriage, your children and your family are dependent on the help you seek, it is important to choose your providers carefully.

Dr Ray & Jean Kadkhodaian created The Lighthouse Emotional Wellness Center with your marriage and your family in mind. They believe that marriage is the cornerstone of the family because they realized the work necessary to maintain happiness in their own relationship. It is this personal attention to your marriage and your family that the entire staff at The Lighthouse holds at the utmost priority.

Why "Emotional Wellness" and not "Behavioral Health"?

Dr. Ray and Jean specifically chose the title “Emotional Wellness” in naming their company to identify the focus of their work to be developmental and educational in nature, focusing on wellness and not pathology. It is their goal to promote empowerment, independence and overall health and happiness in all of their clients’ lives.

We define Emotional Wellness as – A continuing state of awareness, personal responsibility, and acceptance of one’s own feelings through growth and change, in order to be able to manage emotions effectively, deal with conflict appropriately and develop healthy relationships.

Couples Counseling Services
The Lighthouse Emotional Wellness Center was founded on an innovative and powerful approach to couples and marriage counseling, called Couples Synergy, only offered at our location in Schaumburg, Illinois. Whether you have worked with a traditional couples therapist before in the past or not, you will find our approach to be dynamic, gender-balanced, goal-oriented and fair towards both of you.

Besides therapists who have specifically trained in marriage and family therapy training programs, there are no formal specialization licenses for therapists that want to focus on working with couples or families. Thus, there are no standards that therapists need to adhere to in order to call themselves a couples or family therapist, and in fact, most therapists are generalists in nature.

Our model in working with couples is the cornerstone of our practice and has been perfected by Dr Ray & Jean Kadkhodaian over 15 years of work and with thousands of couples. Our model, although unique, inegrates all of the leading research and therapeutic approaches in the field, such as Gottman, Imago, EFT, CBT and Interpersonal modalities. When combining all these evidence-based practices with conjoint therapy, this leads to gender bias minimization and a significant decrease in unproductive and damaging conflict arising in session.

Family Counseling Services
In addition to attending to the struggles that families often encounter within the home, at The Lighthouse, we recognize that over the years, the traditional family structure has changed, and thus family counseling must change along with it.

It is more common than not that today’s children are often diagnosed with disorders such as ADHD, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, depression and spectrum disorders. These factors can complicate and add to the stress of everyday life, making the job of parenting even more challenging.

At The Lighthouse, we pride ourselves on the services we are able to offer children and families struggling with these challenging issues. It is our belief that “it takes a village” to raise a successful family and we do our part to provide the support of a “village” necessary for you and your family to create the happy and healthy relationships you desire.

It is our philosophy that each family member seeking support at The Lighthouse would work with their own counselor, one of the elements of a model that we created called Family Synergy Counseling. This model was developed from the Couples Synergy model that The Lighthouse’s founders, Dr Ray & Jean Kadkhodaian, developed in working with couples.

Both models of therapy emphasize the need for each member of the family system to have their own advocate in the counseling process. This creates a safer environment in order to share their own perspective and feel validated without fear of judgment. Combined structured work with family members would involve all therapists as well, providing a more objective approach to changing dysfunctional patterns within the family system. In addition, education and implementing new skills are key components of the Family Synergy model.
