Patricia Starbird, M.S., LPC/MHSP, EMDRIA Certified

Licensed Professional Counselor

At the root of addiction is deep emotional pain. With that kind of pain, of course a person wants to "numb out" or forget for a little while. Others with that kind of pain distract themselves with busy-ness, taking care of everyone else (codependency), overworking, doing computer games excessively, gambling, viewing pornography, and countless other compulsive behaviors. Without treating the root cause-- deep emotional pain-- people with addictions will relapse again and again. Work with a therapist trained in EMDR trauma therapy to resolve the root cause. Nothing else works to resolve emotional trauma like EMDR therapy. Visit EMDRIA's website or give me a call to explain how it works.

I work with Sexual Addictions in men and women whether it be multiple partners, excessive masturbation, pornography, or any other sexual problem. I relate well to both sexes and am able to help people feel at ease from the first few minutes of the initial session. I also work with their significant others to relieve some of the hurt and pain that comes along with being in a relationship with a sex addict. I offer a group for men who have addictions to porn that meets weekly where these men can gain support from each other but also receive treatment through the group as well.

The disease of addiction is not pleasant for anyone involved. It effects people from all walks of life, and has an impact on every aspect of the society at large. The understanding and science of addiction is just beginning to be understood as a disease of the brain, and not a moral failure. In reality, treatment is proven to be far more effective than punishment. Recovery looks different for each person. Successful recovery usually includes retraining the mind, enjoyable employment, connection to sober family and friends, accountability, and healthy boundaries. I would be honored to help you or your family member overcome the grips of addiction.
