Addiction involves more than a physical dependency on a drug. Even upon completion of treatment, you are at high risk of relapse when you are reintroduced to the stressors of the outside world including psychological and social factors that have a powerful effect. If you seek support/recovery and are searching for a non judgmental environment, contact me.

At the root of addiction is deep emotional pain. With that kind of pain, of course a person wants to "numb out" or forget for a little while. Others with that kind of pain distract themselves with busy-ness, taking care of everyone else (codependency), overworking, doing computer games excessively, gambling, viewing pornography, and countless other compulsive behaviors. Without treating the root cause-- deep emotional pain-- people with addictions will relapse again and again. Work with a therapist trained in EMDR trauma therapy to resolve the root cause. Nothing else works to resolve emotional trauma like EMDR therapy. Visit EMDRIA's website or give me a call to explain how it works.

Licensed Professional Counselor

For those who are new to substance use recovery, I offer help in figuring out what to do next. Life becomes super intense when the substances are removed and it is helpful to have counseling to deal with those thoughts and feelings. I can help those who prefer not to participate in 12-step recovery or those who want therapy in addition to 12-step.

I am a Licensed clinical addiction specialist. This is a license that requires years of education, experience and supervision in the field of addiction. I also am qualified to work with dual diagnosed clients, such as depression, PTSD and addiction. I refer clients out for group outpatient work while I provide individuals with specialized addiction counseling that reduces relapse by treating the trauma and anxiety while teaching skills to regulate emotions and relax into body sensations through mindfulness.

My approach to the treatment of addictions is unorthodox. I begin with the assumption that addictions originate with a person's attempt at solving a problem. Initially the addiction is only a small part of the puzzle until it grows to cause serious side effects. Underneath the addiction lies the root causes (e.g. stress, relationship issues, career challenges) and addictions are the way people cope. At some point, the addiction dominates; however, treatment should spend a significant time focusing on the underlying factors as well as the addiction cycle.
