An addiction is a disease in which one compulsively uses a substance which he or she cannot control and in spite of negative consequences continues to use it. Other forms of addiction counseling are needed for physical dependence and medical issues. My approach is to examine the symbolic, metaphorical meaning of the addictive substance and its use and to explore the inner meaning and motivation for such behavior. I believe insight orientated psychotherapy can assist in long term recovery and lead to greater self awareness and control.
