Philip Kolba, MA

Psychotherapist

Troy, New York 12180

I provide individual psychotherapy for anger management. Anger is normal emotion that everyone experiences. It becomes a problem when one expresses anger inappropriately or one lacks the proficiency to express any emotions but anger. I use Humanistic and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) to help my clients understand their anger, improve their emotional experience, and express their emotions in healthy ways. A healthy emotional life is the cornerstone of living a full and successful life.

Grey Matters International and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, Ph.D approaches issues of anger management in a very humane yet fresh perspective. You see, anger is a normal emotion but it is the valence (intensity) as well as the coupling choice of what one does with this that is the problem. Telling someone to "not" do it or modifying behavior with a trite psychological plan that only breeds a compliant response is not the way to change anger. Brainwave optimization is a new cutting edge technology that allows one to rewire circuitry responsible for reactivity driving the anger. Licensed Pastoral Psychotherapist

Anger is not necessarily bad. It is the instinctual response of being interrupted in the pursuit of a goal. We all need that upsurge of energy to push back when we feel we are pushed or deprived or hurt. But because anger is a very powerful emotional expression it can be hurtful to others or scary or dangerous. Therefore we need to be able to manage our anger in a productive and problem solving way rather than making things worse or even abusive to others. My approach in working with you is to explore your individual situation and offer tools to help you understand your anger and learn to manage it effectively.

I work it down with verbs. Instead of I' m hungry enough to eat a horse, I can pet it, water it, groom it, talk to it, or ride it. Riding it is better for me than overeating because I'm a little mal nourished as it is. Horsemeat might not.be good for. you. It's too tough. So, for the purpose of anger-reduction, riding is better. I suppose the main tenet is to relax when feeling angry, and try real hard not to blame the horse. He doesn't know any better!

Many people with anger problems have a hard time seeing that it is their ideas and beliefs that are causing their anger. There are always going to be people and situations that do not live up to your expectations and values. Learning to resolve such conflicts without hating or hurting or humiliating others can be found in anger management treatment. Controlling immediate impulses and considering the consequences of actions is another effective method. These techniques take practice to learn and the fundamentals can be taught by me. I can guide you through a customized treatment plan to address your specific areas of need.
