Beaumont Counseling Services views Depression in a somewhat different way than others in the field. It is our view that Depression has many similarities to addiction; where the brain seems to be "addicted" to being sad and/or negative. In this approach, clients benefit from learning new strategies of thinking that will serve as a substitute, and eventually a replacement, for their current maladaptive, depressed way of thinking. A systematic strategy is used to promote positive thoughts and overcome learned helplessness.

Depression often has biological, emotional, and relational components to it. It is important to address all of those for maximum care. There are very practical ways to address the biological/physical manifestations of depression. Determining how the brain is involved in the depression is important. How the body is functioning plays a significant role. Emotionally, there may be experiences or dynamics that need to be sorted through by addressing how the past affects the present well-being, and the dynamics of how we relate to self and others, and the depression. Being connected in healthy relationships is also an important part of healing. We look at the whole picture in the process.

My approach to helping those struggling with depression is to offer a supportive environment of acceptance where one feels free to share their pain. I primarily use a Cognitive/Behavioral approach. In this approach I work with my clients to help them learn how to increase activities that have given them joy, such as calling a love one on the phone, going on a walk or bike ride in nature and decrease activities that make depression worse such as substance use or watching too much TV. I also collaborate with my clients to help them identify and challenge their automatic negative thoughts about themselves, and replace those negative thoughts with positive and adaptive thoughts and beliefs.
