Lately a common news topic is mass murder/suicide. With the media reporting shootings about once a month (lately sometimes more), we are left with anguish, heartbreak, anger, confusion and fear. Besides grief, the aftermath always includes the questions of why it happened and how it could have been prevented or foreseen.

When a loss hits you, people are at a loss as to what to do, what to say, how to help. If you yourself have suffered a loss what did you most need from others? Think about how you wanted people to respond and ask yourself if that would fit in the current scenario. If you have not suffered a loss, ask yourself the same question, if it did happen what would you like from others.

Healing is gradual and is not something that can be controlled or turned off and on, or especially, rushed. It is essential to be patient and allow the grieving process to occur naturally.
