tipsfor dealingwith worry
Worry is something that plagues all of us, especially during this time of year. Are we going to have enough food for everyone at our family dinner? Will everyone get the presents that they want? Will we be able to get through this holiday without the family member(s) that we have lost? What will we do in order to be able to get through this season? There are so many thoughts that plague us, and it can be really hard to figure out whether or not we can come with some of the more difficult feelings that we are dealing with on a regular basis. whyisit importantfor meto love myself second picture
All of us have heard the old saying that it's important for us to love ourselves. Many of us, however, don't adhere to that in any way that is helpful to us or the people around us. Why do we have to do this? Isn't it just good enough that we love other people well? What in the world does loving myself have to do with anything? What if I think that I'm an unlovable person? These are the types of questions that come up when this topic comes up. [More]

New Research: Fearful About Ebola? Strengthen Your Immune System

November 27, 2014 10:55 by Dr. C. Wayne Winkle,Phd  [About the Author]

new research fearfulof ebola
New research published in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases (Almendrala, 2014) studied reasons why children survive ebola more often than adults. One conclusion was that children have stronger immune responses to the disease than do adults. The levels of a protein called RANTE, which is a molecule that helps cells in the immune system communicate with each other, were higher in children than in adults. This protein also assists T-cells, the ‘killers’ of invading bacteria and viruses in our bodies. A possible reason for the higher levels of RANTE in children has to do with better health and a stronger immune system. This includes lower stress levels overall. [More]

Writing in a journal, or journaling, can serve as a valuable adjunct to psychotherapy. Keeping a journal is useful to gain and maintain perspective, to process stressors, generate ideas, and recognize functional and dysfunctional patterns in one's life. A journal can be a place for you to vent your emotions, and to take some private time every day to reflect on your life (Bodeeb, 2014). Journals can be used to record changes and milestones in life, and can also be passed on to the next generation as a part of family history. [More]

Millions of people around the world take some sort of medication for mental illness, so if this is something that has come up with your psychiatrist or another mental health professional, it's nothing to be ashamed of. How Do I Recognize a Panic Attack?

September 2, 2014 04:55 by Marti Wormuth, MA  [About the Author]

how do i recognizea panic attack
One terrifying and debilitating thing that many people have to deal with are panic attacks. There are a number of people throughout the world who are diagnosed with panic disorders, and may have to deal with the negative effects of panic attacks on a regular basis as a result of the disorder. Other people may have panic attacks as a side effect of a disorder, like anxiety or depression, because they are unable to deal with extreme amounts of stress; these people don't necessarily have a panic disorder, but suffer from the same sorts of panic attacks that those with disorders have to deal with too.
