A new study published in the Journal of Community Psychology takes a look at the role of paraprofessionals in high-need communities. Paraprofessionals act as liaisons between community mental health programs, families and schools. Although they don’t have the same level of training as mental health workers or teachers, studies have shown that especially in immigrant and low-income communities, paraprofessionals play an important role in helping families navigate the mental health system.

The death of Senator John McCain was commemorated, nationwide, for a full week. He was remembered, primarily, for his courage, while held captive in Vietnam. For 5 1/2 years, held as a prisoner, he refused special treatment. Recent research found that chatbots, or conversational agents, cannot express empathy to the extent a human can and people appreciate the nuances from their peers. Mindfulness is a hot topic. Researchers study the impact of mindfulness on the brain and advocates insist it improves their well being. It is more than personal improvement as mindfulness programs have reached into the workplace. A study published in Journal of Occupational Health Psychology in August of this year found that participants in mindfulness training improved their focus at work and had a slight increase in job satisfaction.
