About Squamish, B.C.

Squamish, BC is located at the tip of Howe Sound in the province of British Columbia. This beautiful community lies in a valley surrounded by the Coast Range Mountains and Pacific Ocean.  Because of the many outdoor activities that are available in the region, Squamish has been given the title-- The Outdoor Recreation Capitol of Canada.  The city derives its name from the aboriginal people Sko-mish or Squamish   These early people hunted, fished and raised their families in this valley, and their decedents still live in the area today.  Squamish counselling, BC aims to bring restoration and recovery to individuals and families in the greater Squamish area.

 

In 1792 British Explorer Captain George Vancouver and his crew sailed into the bay that is now known as Darrell Bay, just south of Squamish.  This opened the door to the rugged adventurer in search of gold and fur.  It took almost another century (1889) before non-native families started to settle and farm the land.  Farming was soon replaced by forestry and today—tourism and outdoor recreation.  Fishing in Squamish provides access to all five Pacific varieties of salmon and is an angler’s paradise.   Diverse peoples including a vibrant first nations community make up the areas inhabitants. Several different religions are found here, the most common being Christian. Counselling Squamish, B.C. is an important resource that we seek to bring to its people. Additionally, Mountain Biking brings the top bike riders from around the world to this area every June when they compete in the Squamish Test of Metal International Mountain Bike Race.
