My hope for you is that you will feel safe and respected so that we can work together to help you find freedom from the struggles you are facing. We at Hope Reins are committed to finding creative and grace filled solutions so you can experience joy and freedom again. We utilize a Christian approach for anxiety counseling and counseling for depression but are respectful of all faiths and journeys. Because we are committed to finding ways to help you get "unstuck", we  offer a unique combination of traditional and alternative therapies. Traditional counseling services such as Assessment and Diagnostic services, Coaching, Tutoring, and Traditional Counseling Services for Individuals, Children, Teens, Families and Couples are offered in through virtual counseling or our Hampshire offices. But in addition, we integrate alternative approaches such as art, play and equine assisted psychotherapy.

Hope Reins provides alternative therapy to individuals, couples, groups, and families therapy using horses at our Hampshire Ranch. Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a type of psychotherapy that uses horses to help provide an experience of change. Rather than talk about change or re-tell difficult experiences, Hope Reins offers opportunities to try new and creative solutions to the patterns in your life that are causing “stuckness”. Your strengths and weaknesses quickly emerge without the need to talk about it. When what you are doing doesn't work, the horses give immediate and clear feedback. They don't lie. Horses are particularly good at giving feedback about leadership, social skills, communication, boundaries and one’s body language. This offers you or your loved one real life opportunities to work on core emotional skills that research shows lead to success. (All activities are ground based, no riding or experience needed)

Training:  Debra is the Executive Director of Hope Reins and  is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 30 years of experience in the field of mental health. She graduated from University of Illinois with Honors in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Between her undergraduate and graduate training, she worked as an Addictions Counselor and then as an Adolescent Mental Health Counselor.  Her passion for children and teens led her back to school to  specialize in marital and family therapy at UIC. In 1990, Debra graduated with Honors from Jane Addams College of Social Work.  Having an unwavering desire to provide therapy that was effective, Debra began to explore alternative therapies to help those clients she felt she wasn't reaching. She began to integrate art therapy and discovered wilderness and equine assisted psychotherapy. In October 2003, she earned her  certification from EAGALA as a Clinical Specialist in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and founded Hope Reins in 2005. Since then she has expanded to include Nora Whitlock, LCSW who specializes in work with children teens and is EAGALA certified.

While Debra loves being a therapist, the truth is that she really, really loves being a wife to her husband of 31 years and a mother to her "grown up" girls. They along with a delightful Doberman and 3 feisty kitties live in an old Victorian that is forever being "fixed up".
