Berkeley, CA is a small city in Northern California, set on the Eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. While the area was first inhabited by Native Americans, then Spanish settlers, followed by white Americans, it did not become an inhabited city until the building of the University of California in the 1870's. According to local lore, the trustees selected the name "Berkeley" after Bishop George Berkeley, who wrote verses, as well as sermons.1 Once construction began, houses were built around the campus and grew into a city.
Since the 19th century, Berkeley has grown into a small city, with a big reputation. In the Sixties, it was the center of the Counterculture movement, and although it is close to Oakland and San Francisco, maintains its own liberal character. Unfortunately, 41.3 % of the population earns less than $40,000 so there is a need for subsidized or low cost cognitive and family therapy.
