Born in Massachusetts and raised in Southwest Virginia, I competed my undergraduate studies at James Madison University. I received my Master's Degree in Clinical Mental Health from Virginia Tech's Counselor Education program in 2008. Upon completion of my graduate degree, I accepted a position as a therapist in an Intensive Outpatient Substance Abuse program at Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare and served in that position for over 8 years. While there I provided counseling to individuals recovering from substance abuse disorders as well as co-occurring diagnoses including mood disorders, personality disorders, and process addictions.
I received training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy from instructors at The Linehan Institute/Behavioral Tech and joined with other DBT therapists to provide extended therapy and education on DBT skills to those referred to the program. While active in the program, I participated on a DBT consultation team for 5 years.
I served on the agency's Trauma Consultation Team for eight years during which time my focus was on trauma-informed treatment. I led multiple therapy groups including Men's TREM (Trauma Recovery and Empowerment), ATRIUM (Addictions and Trauma Recovery Integration Model), and Trauma-Informed substance abuse IOP groups. I also served with other therapists to educate staff on trauma-informed treatment interventions aimed at understanding, recognizing, and responding to the effects of all types of trauma.
In 2014, I established a private practice to broaden my client base and reach out to new populations. I am currently building a practice which emphasizes physical, psychological and emotional safety for both clients and treatment providers, and helps people rebuild a sense of control and empowerment.
My approach is client-centered and solution-focused. As one devoted to the belief that the human experience is driven by personal evolution and a desire to thrive rather than simple survival, my goal is to aid and support those I work with as they search for a more meaningful and rewarding life. I honor and respect a spirit of public service that is the foundation of our profession. I believe that growth and transformation are basic goals of all human beings and that therapy can play a role that far exceeds the resolution of pathology and illness and provides countless options for personal development.
Having been in recovery since 1996, I have personal awareness of what contributes to people making choices that limit their potential and make their world a seemingly less threatening place. I appreciate how challenging it can be to face the experiences that have shaped a person and to begin to move beyond the limiting beliefs many have adopted to protect themselves from the pain, fear and abandonment they have known. The transformation I experienced, and experienced countless others having over the years, has offered me a useful perspective on both sides of the therapeutic process. It has provided me insight and compassion for those struggling with the challenges of life and continues to inspire me to be of service to all people who seek a more authentic life and greater awareness of who they are.
