Rancho Cucamonga is a Tongan word that means "sandy place." Others believe that the name means "place of the villages where the waters come out." Either definition could refer to the same place, as Rancho Cucamonga lies in the foothills where there are several creeks. The landscape and surface soil is very sandy and rocky because of the storm runoff from the mountains.1 Rancho Cucamonga has been identified as one of the safest cities that has a population of over 100,000. The city has also been identified as one of the fastest growing retail markets in California. Aside from this, the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center is one of Rancho Cucamonga's prized attractions. Central Park is an ongoing 103-acre project that includes a senior center and community center, as well as a YMCA program. The programs at the community center include playschool activities, youth classes, young adult classes, and adult classes.

Mental Health in Rancho Cucamonga

Nearly 14 percent of San Bernardino County residents report needing mental health care for a mental illness or substance abuse problem in the last year. While the percentage of county residents who need such services has decreased over the last several years,2 there are still many thousands of people in Rancho Cucamonga and surrounding communities that need behavioral and mental health care. For adults, addiction, depression, and relationship troubles are commonly reported issues. For children, bullying, substance use, and problems at home often can lead to the need for counseling.

The mission of the San Bernardino County Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) is to ensure that parents have the knowledge and tools to provide for the needs of their children. DCSS provides families with various support programs to enhance family functioning. The department not only helps families determine parentage, they also assist parents in acquiring child support. Educational services are offered, as are resources for single parents. Additional information about the programs and services offered by DCSS is available by calling 866-901-3212.3

Current Initiatives

In 2008, the city of Rancho Cucamonga began the Healthy RC Initiative, a multi-pronged approach to improving the health of the city's residents. In particular, the initiative, which continues today, focuses on promoting healthy bodies and healthy minds. With support from area public and private agencies, the initiative has now been extended to include a healthy kids initiative as well. A related program, Community Champions, engages the Spanish-speaking community in the policy-making process. By making the process transparent and inviting community members to join in on decision-making, the initiative has given citizens a sense of ownership and has led to improved physical and mental health for many residents of Rancho Cucamonga.4
