Rancho Cucamonga is a Tongan word that means "sandy place." Others believe that the name means "place of the villages where the waters come out." In particular, the initiative, which continues today, focuses on promoting healthy bodies and healthy minds. With support from area public and private agencies, the initiative has now been extended to include a healthy kids initiative as well. A related program, Community Champions, engages the Spanish-speaking community in the policy-making process. By making the process transparent and inviting community members to join in on decision-making, the initiative has given citizens a sense of ownership and has led to improved physical and mental health for many residents of Rancho Cucamonga.4
