Pleasanton is a city approximately 25 miles east of Oakland and is home to a population of around 72,000 people. 1 Pleasanton is a growing city and has been ranked as one of the wealthier locations in the area. The city is also the headquarters of the grocery store chain Safeway. A couple of large employers have offices in the area, such as Kaiser Permanente and Oracle. John Kottinger, who was a Justice of the Peace, named the city after his friend Major General Alfred Pleasanton. One of the first houses built was in 1854. The home continues to stand and is a centerpiece of the Alviso Adobe Community Park. During the 1850s, Main Street was the scene of many shootouts and thought to be a refuge for bandits and desperados. The city was also the backdrop for the movie Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm that starred Mary Pickford. Castlewood Country Club was also the former home of Phoebe Apperson Hearst.

Mental Health in Pleasanton

Alameda County is home to over 1.5 million people. Of those, over 22 percent are under the age of 18. Nearly 28 percent of county residents are of Asian descent, and another 12.8 percent are African-American. About 12 percent of the county's citizens live in poverty.2 For each of these groups, mental illness and substance abuse is of particular concern, both because of the rate of incidence among minority and special populations, but also because these populations tend to be underserved when it comes to mental health care.

Pleasanton is served by Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services. This county department offers many resources for individuals who need support. Vocational programs serve to educate community members and improve their ability to find employment. For those in need of shelter, the department provides assistance and resources for finding a permanent residence. Educational programs are also available, such as those that seek to help people kick a tobacco habit. Call the county office at 510-567-8100 for further information.3

Current Initiatives

To address social and behavioral issues that face Pleasanton's youth, the city commissioned the Pleasanton Youth Master Plan to identify key areas of need and propose methods for meeting those needs. Included in the master plan is a discussion of the challenges and issues that kids in Pleasanton face. Among the most prominent concerns are bullying, pressure to academically achieve, anxiety, and depression. Additionally, youth face many problems with drug and alcohol use. The city's Youth Master Plan seeks to address these issues in a variety of ways, including entering into partnerships with public and private agencies to deliver educational and outreach programs, safety training, counseling and other activities aimed at helping kids make healthy choices for their future.4
