I believe addiction therapy is a work in progress and is a collaborative effort between the therapist and the client. I believe that a person's addictive behaviors are attempts to avoid and/or diminish emotional pain that haunts the person. In order to have success at freeing oneself from acting out on the addiction, I insist that clients that work with me on issues of addiction must actively work a 12-step program as they go through therapy. The 12-step program gives the client the support and structure needed to break the addictive behavior. The psychotherapy (counseling) is needed to address and heal the underlying emotional pain that the client has been avoiding. I believe that both approaches are needed to secure a long lasting and healthy recovery.
