I work a lot with clients who are dealing with addictions - whether it be to a substance, food, work, or relationships. While the specific content of an addiction might be a mystery to friends and family (they might have never used heroine) the experience of addiction is common to us all. We all, from time to time, have tried to use something or someone to make us feel better. At the core, that is what an addiction is. However, the problem it that it only works in the short run - in the long run when we use substances or people to distract us from our problems or pain, we end up crashing. I help people deal with the core issue so that they can live a purposeful, meaningful, joyful life.

We make a fundamental error in failing to separate what is concrete from what is symbolic and become obsessed with the concrete object, food itself. We do not see that the addictive object is only a symbol of what we truly desire. With substance addictions, removing the addictive substance from the person is essential to recovery. We falsely treat disordered eating in the same way. This only fails because too much emphasis gets placed on the food itself, and not the addictive process. To recover from disordered eating, , we must be willing to go beyond the food itself to discover the presence of the real hunger that underlies the urge to eat compulsively.

Licenced Professional Counselor
Location: 284 South Main Street, Suite 800, Alpharetta
Working with addiction is a large part of my practice. I have past experience running an addiction intensive outpatient group. I work with people who have addictions and family members. In therapy I give clients the knowledge and support they need to get sober and stay that way. I believe in a positive approach that stresses creating a happy full life to replace your addiction and treating additional problems, like depression, that contribute to addictions. I give clients and families help in creating a stable happy life.
Deborah Smith, MA, LPC
Licensed Professional Counselor

I do not work with someone with an active drinking or drug problem (as I believe a specialist would be best in that situation), however, I often work with family members of addicts who want to find serenity and peace in their own lives. Living with a problem drinker can be wrenching and difficult, but you can find a measure of peace in your pain! Talking with someone yourself will not stop someone from drinking or using drugs, but you can control how much it affects your life, and feel more in-control in the process.

Caring and Compassionate Counseling
Location: 2450 Atlanta Hwy Suite 1901, Cumming
Addictions are a difficult battle to beat, but I want my clients to know that they are not alone in this battle, and they can be successful with overcoming the addictions. I have found that addictions have some form of relationship to impulsive/compulsive behaviors. I work with my clients on identifying triggers for their addictions, recognizing the positive and negative consequences of the addictions, and identifying more appropriate behaviors that provide the client with similar positive consequences that the addictions give them.

Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified EMDR Therapist
Location of Therapist: Atlanta, GA
Addictions (substance or behavioral) are often coping mechanisms you developed early in life to help you deal with anxiety, sadness, feeling like you don't fit in, feeling you don't matter, feeling powerless, or for numbing the pain of being criticized, abandoned, neglected, abused or traumatized in some other way. Traumatic events or a life time of upsetting events are often the root cause of addiction. I am a Certified EMDR Therapist with extensive experience in helping adults heal from and put in the past the upsetting events that contribute to their addiction. EMDR Therapy is highly effective and is offered at all the leading residential treatment programs for addiction recovery.
