Anxiety and stress are often the result of losing objective perspective and being taken over by more limited, defensive and often younger parts of self. Enhancing mindfulness in your approach to life's challenges will enlist access to a deeper and wiser part of yourself. Doing worst case analyses and deciding whether you could tolerate life in the unlikely event that all those conditions happened sometimes alleviates anxiety. Learning about our instinctive responses like fight or flight and how they influence our sense of security, and how to soothe out of hyper-arousal or get moving out of hypo-arousal can all help lower stress and anxiety.

Anxiety is an internal alarm system that gives us information about our internal state as well as possible danger in the external world. Often, anxiety is a signal of deeper, more intense emotions such as sadness, anger, and fear. It can also be a consequence of not living authentically. Once these deeper feelings are identified and expressed, they can be readily released. For example, when we say "Yes" when we really mean "No," we will often experience anxiety. In this case, the anxiety is providing us with a warning that we are not being honest (living authentically) with ourself and/or another. Therapy is the perfect place to explore this common emotion.

Do you have an unsettled feeling? A kind of constant rumbling under the surface that leaves you feeling jittery, agitated, exhausted. Anxiety can be normal and a good sign - being nervous before a test. But the kind of anxiety that debilitates you - interfering with sleep, job performance, parenting and relating can be helped and reduced or alleviated by seeing a psychotherapist. In understanding your thoughts and feelings, a therapist can help to target the underlying triggers leading to anxious feelings, providing relief and hope.

While most treatment approaches for anxiety and stress are effective on the surface, they don’t treat the real problem. Mantras, deep breathing, and rational dialogues about your fear being irrational rarely work---for most people don’t believe it or you! Imagine if you can trick the brain into changing without you telling your conscious mind that you are changing it? Problem with anxiety and stress is that the brain in this state knows you want to change it and it resists. Contact Kevin@kevinfleminphd.com for the ultimate stress and anxiety solution that will literally change your brain's autonomic nervous system patterns while you sit on your butt. 877-606-6161.

Being alive means experiencing at least some anxiety and stress. There are "optimal" levels of anxiety and less-than-optimal levels as well. If you are experiencing too much anxiety, it can feel debilitating and compromise your ability to perform or be present in life. If you are experiencing too little anxiety, you might not feel engaged or care much. With optimal levels--which is what I attempt to assist my clients in achieving--you feel motivated but not hampered in your day to day experiences.

Do worries interfere with your quality of life? Is stress causing you to lose sleep? Are you uncomfortably restricted by your level of anxiety? Anxiety and stress are a normal part of life. But when they move beyond the ordinary into the overwhelming, they become an obstacle in your path. It's like that troll under the bridge - whenever you try to cross the bridge of your life, they rise up and threaten and you have to stop and back away. Therapy is a way to take a look at what overwhelms you and what can be done. I work with individuals and couples to sort out what stands behind the stress and anxiety, and what keeps you from inner peace. Call today for a phone consultation.
