When I work with young children I utilize art therapy techniques whereby we look at creating images through drawings, comic strips, hand painting and other creative means to assist the child in expressing difficult feelings and thoughts. We use imaginative metaphors and narrative therapy techniques to assist child in their story telling. These techniques assist in implementing behavioral change by providing tangible solutions self-created by the children. For example, when creating a comic strip whereby we look at the environments in which the child feels anxious, depressed etc. We look at the potential powers the child has to get through those challenges in those specific environments.

Children need to know that they are safe, secure and loved at all times. Working with children requires a specialized touch from the therapist. Developing the initial first visit is crucial for developing the relationship with the child. Children are creative and playful beings who express themselves through these avenues of experiential engagement. When working with children I observe their interaction, play, behaviours, expressions and listen to what it is they are saying or not saying. Actions and behaviours speak louder than words. ``It is easier to build up a child than it is to repair an adult...choose your words wisely.`` (Unknown)

I am a psychotherapist who has worked in community agencies serving children, youth and families for over 20 yrs. No matter the origins of a child's difficulties, the most effective way to work them out is in the parent-child relationship. In therapy Annette will provide a safe, non-judgemental environment to help parents apply principles of attachment to strengthen their parent-child relationship. This would include exploring ways to overcome the difficulties they have been experiencing as well as taking steps towards their family's goals.

Children often do not have full cognitive abilities to process and resolve many issues.... especially trauma. These events get locked in the 'psychological system' waiting for resolution. I use very effective techniques, in a safe and caring environment, that bring children and youth to a place where they can process these incidents in order to let them go, which in turn, allows them to be free to grow without the traumatic events shaping their development and personality.

Children and adolescents successfully meet most of the challenges posed by the various stages of their development. They also have incredible resiliency in the face of challenging environments and life issues. At the same time they are, however, very aware and sensitive to the stress in family life and their environments. When having difficulty coping, adolescent distress can manifest itself through difficulties in learning, relationships and in emotional & behavioural development.
