I am the father of an adult son with autism. I have had to learn various strategies to help him cope with his difficulties, as well as finding ways to help me find ways of dealing with the frustration of no having all of the answers. This experience , as well as my 25 years of being a special education teacher, give me a unique perspective into how to understand how a child feels inside, and how to develop ways for the child, and the family to deal with serious emotional issues. I would find it my greatest honor to earn the trust necessary to join you on this journey.

Young children can’t always articulate their emotional problems. Some children need help coping with bullying, peer pressure, or academic demands. Others may be confused and overwhelmed by family issues, such as a move, divorce, or illness. With some children, the cause of their tearful or sulky state is unclear.
If you’re concerned about your child’s mood, appetite, academic performance, social interaction, or behavior for any reason, Lara can help you help your child.
Therapy teaches children how to reach out for help and reduces the risk of further trauma in adulthood. Lara can help your child express emotions and develop problem-solving skills.

Children have stress just as adults do. They have to cope with divorce, blended families, high academic expectations, grief and loss, to name a few. Therapy can provide a safe place for them to just be who they are. With small children, I do play therapy. This may involve art projects, games, or dolls. Every parent knows that asking kids a direct question gets them nowhere, but children can express volumes through their play. At the same time, it feels safe and comfortable to them. If you have concerns about your child's behavior or you know they are going through a hard time, please call. There is no charge for a phone consultation.

Working children in age from 10 to adolescents is a gift. More often it also includes working the parents. Family counseling assists the entire system to move forward.
This is a process of teaching, re-educating, and learning parenting techniques to assist the parents, i.e.: making them aware of their unconscious patterns, and affording children a safe environment to express themselves.

Young Children need a gentle approach to therapy. When working with youngsters I will engage them through art. Art therapy is an engaging, nonthreatening way for a child to express him/herself. Games are also used employed to engage the children and appeal to their playful natures. I have heard it said that humor is the best form of medicine, and this is so true when working with children. Expect the path to healing to be full of laughter as we follow the path from hurt and sorrow to peace and joy. I also realize that the parents are an important part of the healing process so I will make weekly suggestions for the parents to work on at home, and I will ask for their feedback each session.

Children come to therapy for a variety of reasons. Some examples are behavioral problems, failing grades, not focusing, not staying on task, fighting with peers, poor social skills, not listening at home, and hyperactivity. Using play therapy and art therapy, I help children express themselves. Children experience counseling as fun which results in them expressing themselves honestly and resolving the issue through play. If you want to help your child be successful in school or at home, I can help you.
