Thrive Counseling offers both individual and group grief support programs for grieving children, adolescents and their families/guardians. Dealing with grief because of death and loss of loved ones has never been easy and for parents it’s hard to know which symptoms are normal grief responses and which spell trouble in kids. Grieving the loss of family or friends may go on for years in some cases and can be a life changing situation. Grief is an emotion we wish could be reserved only for adults, but the reality is, grief does not discriminate. That is why it is so important to have caring support in times of bereavement and grief. Children and teens many times have problems dealing with grief bec....

Grief and loss is a part of every life. Sometimes we can become stuck in a rut and be unable to move on with our lives. Having someone come alongside you and help carry that burden can make all the difference. I believe in the healing power of art when words fail and the healing found in the therapeutic relationship. Many are traumatized by the losses they have endured and only need to reach out for help.

In the presence of warmth and compassion, I help clients to work through the phases and stages of grief at their own pace. When clients have experienced loss due to death, divorce or separation from someone they love, the most important foundation to a healing process is having a therapist who is consistently able to hold that space of unconditional warmth. There is no rushing the process of grief. My professional support provides a steady place to do the work of grieving and healing.

Dealing with the loss of some we know can sometimes be extremely diffiicult, especially if the loss is sudden. Perhaps there were things left unsaid or things said that bring regret. I work with individuals to explore their feelings about the loss and help them get to a place where they can lean on positive feelings to balance the negative feelings they are experience due to the loss. I also deal with helping individuals who are suffering from complex grief, which can result in them remaining stuck in the grief process.

No safer place. No better time. Loss happens to all of us, at some points along our journey. The experience can be intensely painful and even alter the direction of our lives in negative and harmful ways. In times of grief we can either turn to God or away from Him. In His goodness, God will not waste your pain, and can turn your ashes into beauty. Let me help you grieve in a healthy manner, and move forward with hope in spite of what you have faced.

Having experienced grief and loss myself, I understand how difficult it is. I also know first hand what it is like to just "go through the motions." The tricky part about grief and loss is that there is no one way to experience it. It is different for all. There is no how-to manual on how to get it right. But acknowledging the pain of loss is the best place to begin. This can be the loss of a family member, friend, or pet; loss of status, employment, house, a relationship, or a dream of the future. Many people don't know how to deal with those who are experiencing a loss. It is icky to many because they don't know how to rid you of pain. I, however, promise to sit with you in your pain.

Grief is a very personal process, we all grieve differently, and this is even truer for children, particularly if we have expectations that their process is the same as ours. The child's understanding of death changes for not even understanding the concept as a small child to understanding the concept but not developed enough emotionally to cope as well as adults. The truth be known there are many ideas on stages of grief and what is normal, but there are no hard rules about what normal really means. I have taken courses and post graduate study on grief and worked successfully with children and adults to help them handle their grief.

Grief and loss touch all of us in time. None of us are immune to it. You may be greiving the loss of a parent, a spouse, a child, or other family member or a friend. You may also be grieving the loss of a beloved pet. Or you may find yourself grieving in ANTICIPATION of the loss of any of these mentioned. Greiving is an individual journey. Sometimes it lasts but a few weeks, but sometimes it lasts well over a year. Support from friends and family is very important, and you are encouraged to seek out those who offer such support. But if you feel you need something more than friends and family are able to give, I'd welcome the opportunity to help.
