Garrett Counseling's team of counselors has significant experience in helping our clients cope with depression and enter life with the coping skills they need to be healthy. We help our clients process and communicate their emotions then teach them coping skills.

Depression comes when you shutdown to your emotional experience; to your aliveness. Your motivations and desires are negatively affected. Our work will allow you to open to those emotions and return to a state of aliveness. This is accomplished by our conversation/discussion examining in detail how you go through your daily life. I will ask you to enhance your awareness with tools such as daily journals, meditation, and dramwork. We will then use this awareness to take you deeper into your emotional experience. This is a naturally self reinforcing process.

Depression can be experienced in different forms. Situational depression results from a particular life event or series of events. It is characterized by a sense of feeling down, dissatisfied, sad, lonely - emotions which are normal responses. Over time, the feelings resolve, after a period of accepting them and being able to move on. On the other hand, clinical depression does not resolve with time. It has the feelings of situational depression, as well as the inability to function adequately in everyday life. This inability is characterized by loss of energy, negative self-image, and perhaps suicidal thoughts. It is a medical issue which requires medical treatment and counseling.

Grey Matters International, Inc. and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, Ph.D. handles depression and other emotional disorders in a very unique way. Most of therapy or counseling processes utilize validation, unconditional positive regard, and reframing as common techniques to get someone to heal from their depression. Though this can be helpful, it rarely fixes the core problem behind it and for tough cases we then refer them usually to a psychiatrist for medication which can have tons of side effects.
