Depression can be debilitating and make life feel hopeless. Many times people with depression want to get better, but don't know how. That's where a good therapist can help! My training, background, and experience can provide those suffering from depression the necessary tools and strategies to help improve mood and return to stable and healthy functioning. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming to face these challenges, but that is why I focus on taking baby steps, taking it one day at a time, and putting one foot in front of the other, and providing a lot of support and understanding. I have witnessed many clients improve and successfully fight off their depression. There is hope!

Depression counseling involves assessing and making appropriate changes in the physical, emotional, and relational aspects of a client's life that are contributing to depressed mood. I work with clients to both remedy the underlying causes and their resulting cognitions, and the lifestyle habits that hinder their recovery. Often it is appropriate to work in conjunction with medical professionals who may suggest medications and/or nutritional supplements to correct the biochemical aspects of depressive episodes. Clients benefit most when their treatment is comprehensive and avoids dealing solely with symptom relief.

I use several methods for helping you overcome depression. I support you in maintaining safety. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, I help you to identify unhelpful thoughts and learn how to restructure your thoughts. I help you identify root causes of your depression and find ways to reduce their impact by replacing them with activities and relationships that support you in increased positive mood and personal responsibility. Depression can be comorbid with other issues you may be struggling with and I take a holistic approach to help you address what is needed in order to become a more fulfilled, and satisfied individual.

We have learned much in the past decade or so about the neurobiology of emotions and their relationship to our body, genetics, and past experiences. Although there may be medical causes of depression that may be medically treatable, research has shown that a combination of psychotherapy and medication is the best treatment. In therapy, we will explore your experiences that may be contributing to depression. We will identify ways to improve self-care (i.e., sleep, diet, exercise), and the ways in which thoughts and emotional responses to stress contribute to depression along with options for improving managing symptoms and coping with emotions.

My therapeutic approach in treating depression is to assist my clients in gaining insight and awareness as to the origin and cause of their depressed mood and unhappiness. I conduct an evaluation to determine the severity of the depression and create a treatment plan for therapy. I assist clients in understanding the causes for their depression, help clients develop coping mechanisms and increase awareness of behaviors that perpetuate the client's depression. My work mainly consists of teaching emotional intelligence, mindfulness, DBT, and CBT skills to learn to manage and overcome the depression.

Clients usually experience a progressive decline in mood, which can impact their emotions, the quality of their sleep, relationships (they may even begin to withdraw from others), and have persistent negative thoughts. Many clients prefer to explore viable holistic and integrative strategies before trying medication. In our collaboration, we will design a plan to explore possible options, strategies to strengthen effective coping mechanisms, and identify a plan to enhance the opportunity for recovery.
