Children are such a blessing! Children have a way of dealing with life issues different from adults and a lot of times are very resilient. Counseling for children can range from difficulty in school, behavioral issues, parental divorce, loss of a loved one, etc.... The approach for counseling children is different from that of counseling adults. In counseling children the use of play is important and often times more effective than talking alone. Children might be asked to draw, use puppets, make scenes in a sand tray, or even play therapeutic board games with the counselor and a family member. Children will use the skills learned to help with future situations.

I work with children from age 4 and above using some play therapy and other age-appropriate interventions and coping skills to help with attention issues, social skills, anger management, defiance, discipline, and family issues, as well as anxiety or other mental health issues. Games, worksheets, and other age-appropriate tools are sometimes used to help learn skills and get the point across in a way that the child can understand.

My approach to counseling children is supportive, engaging, and developmentally appropriate. I create a safe, nurturing space where children can express emotions, build coping skills, and develop self-awareness in ways that feel natural and age-appropriate. Sessions focus on emotional regulation, communication, and problem-solving, while supporting confidence and resilience. When appropriate, I collaborate with caregivers to provide guidance and strategies that reinforce progress outside of sessions, helping children feel understood, supported, and better equipped to navigate challenges at home, school, and in relationships.

Dr. Kelsey completed specialized training in pediatrics and is also certified as a school psychologist. She has worked for over 15 years with children and teens. Her team also includes several excellent therapists who also love working in this area. Teen therapy is often conducted by our board-certified DBT clinician who helps teens work on emotional regulation and learning to feel positive control over their emotions, which increases confidence and positive self-esteem! In my practice, I use behavior therapy (parent management training), both individual and group cognitive behavioral therapy as well as multisystemic therapy. MST is goal-oriented and focuses on helping the caregivers manage and nurture their challenging children more effectively.
