Children can experience many mental health problems, including stress, depression, ADHD and trauma. I work with children in a variety of ways including play therapy techniques geared toward helping build coping skills for depression and anxiety, Neurofeedback to help with focus and stress issues, family therapy to help with communication issues and skill building to help with self-esteem and depression. I use Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy to help children going through abuse issues. I have worked with children and adolescents for over 20 years and try to develop a very individualized plan for each child's specific needs.

Dr. Kelsey completed specialized training in pediatrics and is also certified as a school psychologist. She has worked for over 15 years with children and teens. Her team also includes several excellent therapists who also love working in this area. Teen therapy is often conducted by our board-certified DBT clinician who helps teens work on emotional regulation and learning to feel positive control over their emotions, which increases confidence and positive self-esteem! Child therapy is often a combination of skills training, and activities that feel playful and help us children to understand themselves better. We also complete full psychological assessments (ASD/ADHD, dyslexia, etc!)

My approach to counseling children is supportive, engaging, and developmentally appropriate. I create a safe, nurturing space where children can express emotions, build coping skills, and develop self-awareness in ways that feel natural and age-appropriate. Sessions focus on emotional regulation, communication, and problem-solving, while supporting confidence and resilience. When appropriate, I collaborate with caregivers to provide guidance and strategies that reinforce progress outside of sessions, helping children feel understood, supported, and better equipped to navigate challenges at home, school, and in relationships.

Children are such a blessing! Children have a way of dealing with life issues different from adults and a lot of times are very resilient. Counseling for children can range from difficulty in school, behavioral issues, parental divorce, loss of a loved one, etc.... The approach for counseling children is different from that of counseling adults. In counseling children the use of play is important and often times more effective than talking alone. Children might be asked to draw, use puppets, make scenes in a sand tray, or even play therapeutic board games with the counselor and a family member. Children will use the skills learned to help with future situations.
