This approach is based on the many systems or relationships of which we are all a part... couples, family, school, work, community, religion, and so on. Our relationships do not exist independently... they are all interconnected. Integrated family therapists agree that changes in one member of the family, cause changes in the other members, and eventually the entire family system. Integrated family systems therapists use techniques and strategies from various approaches to family therapy to achieving specific objectives, including reducing families' presenting problems and improving relationships.

As human beings, we have a natural need and desire to be connected to others. We also have an equally strong need to be an autonomous self. Learning to balance these seemingly oppositional forces can be quite a task, especially when you consider that the primary place we attempt to learn these skills is within the context of our family unit.
