Lawrence is not just a college town, but has several private schools, including Bishop Seabury Academy, Veritas Christian School, and St. John Catholic School. Lawrence Community Shelter offers a variety of programs designed to strengthen family bonds and improve overall family functioning. Their parent education program focuses on fostering skills that help parents make day-to-day decisions that facilitate the social, emotional, and physical growth of their children. Parents also learn how traumas in their past influence their parenting style in the present. Many services for victims of abuse are available at the Willow Domestic Violence Center. Advocates are on hand 24-hours a day to provide information, resources, and referrals. Support groups offer a safe place for women and children to share their experiences and encourage one another to continue on the road to recovery. Children's services are available as well, such as a therapeutic art program. The center also engages in community outreach and prevention projects in order to raise awareness about domestic violence and the services available to those who have lived through it. Family Services and Assistance Programs

Lawrence families in need of support can turn to a number of non-profit agencies for assistance. TFI Family Services offers foster care and adoption programs to ensure all children have a safe and healthy home in which to grow up. These programs also include comprehensive case management services that provide social, emotional, and financial support for foster and adopted children. Resources for relatives-as-parents are also offered.4 The First United Methodist Church undertakes activities that support and strengthen families. The church adopts low-income families in the community and provides them with Christmas gifts to lift their spirits during the holidays. Each summer, the church collects and distributes school supplies to children so they have what they need to be successful in school.
