Grand Rapids, Michigan is a place where relaxation and thrill coexist, which is perfect for families. Not only are there several areas great for outdoor recreations such as boating and fishing, but also the city offers a wide variety of family-oriented fun. John Ball Zoo has over 1,000 animals as well as an on-site aquarium and children's area.1 In terms of educational attractions, the Public Museum of Grand Rapids and Grand Rapids Children's Museum are two of several in the city, with the first containing historical and natural exhibitions as well as a carousel from the late 1920s, while the second provides hands-on exhibits for children to engage in and explore. For the summer season, the area offers multiple locations to sunbathe beachside or enjoy water events such as boating and fishing. During the winter, the downtown area provides ice-skating at the local rink.

Current Initiatives

To reduce the impacts of bullying and harassment on the mental health of school-aged children, the Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan launched the Be Nice Initiative. As part of the program, students learn that the things they say and do have real and lasting effects on others. Be Nice encourages children to diffuse negative situations with positive thoughts, words, and actions. Children also learn how positivity can make them feel better about themselves, as well as make someone else's day brighter.5
