The Divorce Recovery Workshop is for adults who have recently ended their marriage. Each meeting features a guest speaker, as well as time for participants to share and discuss their experiences. The church's Broken Rainbow group provides children with much needed guidance and peer support as they try to overcome the disappointment of their parent's divorce. DARE America is much more than an anti-drug abuse campaign. In addition to events that teach children refusal skills and inform them of the dangers of substance use, the programs offered at local schools teach children valuable life skills that help them make good decisions that improve their overall health. Included in the program is a discussion of safety around strangers. Children use role-play situations to learn skills that will help keep them safe when encountering people they do not know. Children also learn how to resist pressure from an adult to engage in risky behaviors, and develop an understanding of the types of adults they can trust.4
Family Services and Assistance Programs
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul provides comprehensive assistance programming to families that have fallen on hard times. The church distributes meals and personal hygiene kits to individuals and families who do not have a permanent home. Those that do have a home can take advantage of the ministry's food pantry and thrift store to meet their most basic needs. The church also offers personal visitation services to homebound residents and residents in nursing homes, as well as those who are incarcerated. These visits provide much needed social interaction and support, especially for residents who struggle with loneliness, financial stress, health issues, or legal issues.
