Addiction is a mental health condition and I treat addiction by a multi-pronged process predominately from a Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) model. I help my clients understand the reasons they use a substance or engage in an addictive behavior, teach them skills regulate their emotions and tolerance distress that might otherwise lead them to engage in their addiction, and address any underlying issues that contribute to their addiction. I also help clients with with concerns about their substance use or compulsive behavior to avoid developing addictions.

I have worked within a MAT provider setting. Many things about the addiction treatment process and the process that those who are on the road to recovery go through. Within the medication addiction treatment process, there needs to be a combination of psychotherapy and medication. The medication provided prevents someone from having cravings and reduced withdrawal effects. The model with which this center adhered to was harm reduction. The harm reduction model emphasizes the weakness of humanity and recognizes that the road to recovery is a challenge and there will be setbacks. These are my core beliefs around addiction treatment.

Addiction refers to anything that has become harmful or prevents you from reaching your ideal life - drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, self-harming, etc. I am coming from a sanctuary based, harm-reduction clinic which is ingrained in my approach to addiction. It means I value honesty in this process. I am not about forcing immediate sobriety or shaming you during relapse. It means I recognize and encourage your efforts and your small steps, even if they feel really small. fit. I want to focus on why YOU want to change and not why others told you you need to quit and I want to plan based on your environment and life circumstances to better assure progress.
