Couples come to counseling because there are problems in their relationship. That is where we start. We will use our sessions to find out what the strengths and weaknesses of the relationship are and how we can find solutions for you to enjoy one another again. We will work together to create a plan that works specifically works for YOUR relationship. Sessions will consist of talking about real issues, learning new tools, and practicing them.

I provide couples counseling to those in traditional and alternative lifestyle relationships. I recognize that you have probably already tried to improve the situation and you want help quickly in a confidential and non-judgmental environment. I focus on giving you methods that will make positive changes from the first session and usually am able to schedule you within the same week as you call.

There are countless models of healthy romantic relationships, from monogamous to polyamorous, and unique variations between partners. The scripts for dating and longterm relationships of our parents’ generations may not be applicable to your relationship, and there is no formal education in how to be a good partner or how to identify unhealthy relationships. But there is psychological research that shows that effective communication, emotional openness, intimacy, and other factors contribute to healthy relationships. Creating these conditions are skills that can be learned. I practice brief humanistic and emotion-focused therapy (EFT) to help my LGBTQ and hetero clients learn these skills.

A committed relationship isn't always one in which marriage is involved. Couples therapy is an approach to help you to learn to listen to each other deeply. Intimacy, transparency, and vulnerability are key to your relationship success. In addition, learning to soothe yourself prior to your communication so that you can treat each other in new and supportive ways is helpful.
