Is something getting you down? Is life not going as planned? Life throws us curves sometimes and we may feel stuck due to behaviors, influences, and circumstances. I enjoy counseling individuals who are struggling with a variety of circumstances. I use an eclectic approach to counseling. This means that I am trained in numerous therapeutic approaches. In a counseling session we will explore emotional and cognitive barriers, past and present relationships, and collaboratively devise therapy goals. I would like to help assist you in a safe and therapeutic environment to provide some tools, support, or coping and problem solving skills in a nonjudgmental and caring environment.

If you are feeling depressed, this may be a good sign. You may simply have some healthy awareness in you, of something that needs attention. Obviously there are numerous reasons for depression. Some can be easily seen, while others may be hidden. If your depression is intense or of long duration, your normal coping mechanisms may not be allowing you to reach a successful resolution. Call me for an assessment and possible treatment recommendations.

You don't have to live under the shadow of depression. Maybe you feel unmotivated, fatigued, disinterested, sad, or numb but it can change. Depression is more than a problem with the way you feel emotionally because it negatively impacts your relationships, productivity, attention, memory, and physical health. To treat depression I do talk therapy to give people the knowledge and skills to reduce their depressive symptoms but I also help them restore their connection to others and renew their hope and respect for themselves.

I work with clients experiencing clinical and/or situational depression. We use a combination of CBT, EMDR and other modalities to uncover the roots of depression and to make us aware of our triggers and thought patterns. Through self-awareness and self-compassion, clients discover new ways of looking at their world which align with their values.

Are You A High-Functioning Person Who Nevertheless Battles With A Sense Of Hopelessness And Low Self-Esteem? If you are high-functioning in other areas of life, you are probably used to being successful and comparing yourself to others in a culture that is eager to define you based on what you have over who you are. And perhaps when you attempt to address such symptoms of depression with partners, friends, or family, you find that you’re met with toxic positivity or a sense that you should be grateful for all you have and all that you’ve accomplished. We are here to provide understanding, a listening ear, and tools to get through depression.

Grey Matters International, Inc. and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, Ph.D. handles depression and other emotional disorders in a very unique way. Most of therapy or counseling processes utilize validation, unconditional positive regard, and reframing as common techniques to get someone to heal from their depression. Though this can be helpful, it rarely fixes the core problem behind it and for tough cases we then refer them usually to a psychiatrist for medication which can have tons of side effects. Instead, why not try a natural and arguably more effective way to not just change your mind, but change the brain--where the depression is rooted. Contact us at kevin@kevinflemingphd.com.

I approach Depression as I do any other "feeling state". Simply, everyone experiences the same emotions, as mentioned above in the paragraph about grief. As unpleasant as it seems, I believe that it MUST have a purpose and once that purpose is satisfied the feeling goes back into the background until it is needed again. Though I do not prescribe, and I prefer a "meds-free" environment, I encourage the use of medications for a while in order to stabilize things. I've been told that the combination of meds and traditional talk-therapy seems to work very well for a lot of people. My focus is positive and I encourage the same from my clients.

Depression takes such an intense toll not only in the quality of our life but also of those that live around us. Sometimes it is necessary to seek the aid of medication to get past this difficult moment in our lives and at times we are able to gain tools and abilities to help keep depression at bay. With the use of Neurofeedback I can offer an alternative to treatment without having to stop taking medication at first, together we can fight depression from taking hold of our lives.

Research shows that the most effective treatment for depression is psychotherapy. Depression can range from feeling down to major symptoms such as having trouble even getting out of bed or contemplating suicide (if you have suicidal thoughts or plans, call the National Suicide Prevention Line at 1-800-273-8255). Online counseling is effective for depression because it is easy to access: you can start treatment without even leaving the house.

Let's take a look at your level of sadness through questionnaires and reports from loved ones to see if what you are experiencing is within the normal range or beyond that. If it is more than what is generally experienced, you may benefit from a doctor's care treating depression with medicine. If your sadness and lack of hope are manageable, or medication is required, we will work to find out what is causing distress, learn skills which promote resolution of sadness, help you to cope with life, help to open up healthy communication and resolve conflicts with those important to you, and maintain an active lifestyle which promotes fitness and improved mood for your life.
