We want connection- a space to be vulnerable and truly seen. But emotional intimacy is risky, and that scares us, especially with a difficult history! Instead of being vulnerable, we build up walls to protect us. Let's break down the walls and build a loving connection.

Lubbock has several buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.1 The Cactus Theatre was built in 1938 as the area's first neighborhood movie theatre. Increasing competition caused the business to close in the 1950's. The site was purchased in 1993 and refurbished. Today it is home to many live performances and movies. The Carlock Building is in the art deco style and opened as a cotton exchange. The owners have continuously occupied it since that time. Finished in 1908, The Tubbs-Carlisle House is an excellent example of the Queen Anne Style. Descendants have lived in the house for over 100 years. Another lovely house in the city is the Warren and Myrta Bacon House. Added to the register in 1982, this Neo-Classical structure was constructed in 1916. Mr. Bacon was a civic leader and successful businessman. The house is currently owned by the Episcopal Diocese of Northwest Texas.

Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Lubbock

Children today face many challenges to their emotional and mental well-being. Anger issues, in particular, can be extremely destructive if they are not addressed appropriately. The Family Guidance and Outreach Center of Lubbock offers several free programs for area youth that teach anger management skills. The Targeting Teen group helps participants identify triggers that cause them to be upset and frustrated, then provides them with strategies to calm down and think before they act. For younger children, consider the Anger Wranglers and the Dino-Might Tykes groups. Both groups include theme-based instruction that teaches kids how to identify their emotions and how to control their anger in a positive way. For further details, call 806-747-5577.2

The Parenting Cottage offers a wide variety of free parenting courses to help Lubbock parents improve their ability to provide a healthy, safe, loving home for their children. School-based programs help expecting and new teen mothers identify essential skills for raising a child and providing the emotional, social, and physical supports necessary for proper child development. Other classes focus on financial topics, including budgeting income and money management, so parents have the finances to address any medical or mental health needs their child may have. By fostering the development of these life skills, the Parenting Cottage ensures Lubbock parents have the resources they need to raise happy, healthy children. Call 806-795-7552 for additional information.3

Family Services and Assistance Programs

From time to time, families need assistance from local agencies in order to remain together, pay their bills, and find rehabilitation services to improve mental health functioning. Lubbock County's General Assistance office provides financial relief in times of emergency. These funds can be used to purchase food, pay utilities, and pay rent. Case management services are also provided to ensure families receive the social and emotional supportive services they require.4 The Neighborhood House also provide support services to Lubbock families. Emergency prescription assistance is available for families who need medication to maintain optimal mental and physical functioning but cannot pay for them on their own. Their Kids Pack program supports academic, emotional and physical growth by providing needy kids with school supplies, books, and healthy snacks. For more information, call 806-741-0459.5
