Carolina House Eating Disorder Treatment Center View Specialties

Carolina House Eating Disorder Treatment Center is a gender-inclusive mental health treatment center for people age 17 and older who are struggling with eating disorders and co-occurring mental health and addiction concerns. Situated in North Carolina, we have locations in Durham and Raleigh. With a residential treatment program, partial hospitalization program (PHP), intensive outpatient program (IOP), and free alumni support groups, our premier facility can help clients as they work toward healing.

Eating disorders take many forms, and everyone has unique challenges in healing from them. Our facility can treat various eating disorders, including anorexia, binge-eating disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, bulimia, and orthorexia. Our targeted programming is designed to help you at every step of the treatment process and show you how a healthier and more satisfying life is possible.

Our residential treatment program is the foundation of our treatment model. Residential treatment means you will live on-site at our facility while receiving treatment from our multidisciplinary team of professionals, which might include licensed therapists, registered nurses, dietitians, and a professional culinary team. In addition, you may be surrounded by peers who are working to overcome similar difficulties, helping you to build a support structure that can last a lifetime. Residents can receive several individualized therapies to help them manage symptoms of the eating disorders they are struggling with. These may include meeting weekly with an individual therapist, regular group therapy sessions, and targeted work with our registered dietitian and psychiatrist.

In addition, we provide clients with the unique opportunity to work directly with nutritionists and dietitians and engage in therapeutic activities that may include meal planning, food preparation, grocery shopping, and family-style dining. Each program or activity is designed to create a healthy relationship with the food that nourishes us, rather than demonizing past behavior and focusing on problems rather than solutions.

For those who wish to remain at home while receiving treatment, or for people stepping down from residential care, our IOP may be an ideal choice. This treatment method involves attending our facility several days a week for intensive therapies that can be effective at helping people heal from eating disorders. Therapies at our PHP and IOP might include dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and motivational interviewing. Importantly, many people who are struggling with eating disorders also have co-occurring mental illnesses.

Co-occurring concerns can contribute to the effects of a client’s eating disorder, and leaving these conditions untreated can negatively impact a client’s chances of long-term healing. Our program can help treat people who have anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other mental illnesses that can occur with an eating disorder. We can also support clients who have co-occurring addictions.

Helping people heal from their eating disorders takes a multifaceted approach. There is no one-size-fits-all approach, so we offer several different treatment methods to help clients heal. This includes standard behavioral health treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) but also includes more holistic practices such as mindful movement programs, art therapy, and interpersonal process groups. By giving people the tools they need to heal from their eating disorders, we can inspire long-term, holistic well-being.

Carolina House is the premier location for North and South Carolinians — as well as people from surrounding states — to receive treatment for eating disorders. More than just another treatment facility, we seek to treat the whole person and help clients develop the skills and resiliency for ongoing recovery. We can help you regain a positive relationship with the food that nourishes you — contact our team to find out how.
