Cedar Hill is an amazing city located in the northwest Hill Country of Texas. This town is just minutes from Dallas and offers fun for the entire family. Any trip here should begin with a visit and picnic to Joe Pool Lake, complete with swimming, fishing, boating, hiking, and camping opportunities for you and your children to enjoy. You can also participate in an engaging walking tour of this area and check out educational exhibits by going to the Cedar Hill Museum of History.1 For children and teenagers alike, there is the Recreation Center, which offers not only opportunities for basketball, swimming, and other sports, but hands-on fitness classes. Your nights can also be just as entertaining as your days when you stop by the Cinemark USA for the latest family-friendly flick.

Mental Health in Cedar Hill

LGBT youth not only face discrimination at school and by the general public, but can also be subjected hostility at home. Being unwelcome, misunderstood, and judged can cause kids to feel alone, depressed, and sometimes even suicidal. Fortunately, the Youth First Program offered by the Resource Center offers various educational programs that seek to counter these mental health issues by empowering LGBT individuals to accept themselves, be proud of themselves, and deal effectively with family and peers who act negatively towards them. The program also builds a peer support network, which, along with confidence building activities, support better mental health and enhanced life functioning. Call 214-879-0400 to find out more.2

Homelessness can occur for many reasons. Loss of job and divorce are common causes. Untreated mental health issues such as alcoholism and chemical dependency are also leading factors. Teena's Place helps residents overcome all of these issues by providing a clean, safe, drug and alcohol free living environment. But shelter is not the only resource provided. A strong educational component is also included, so residents develop life skills required to overcome their habit and function at an optimal level. By providing these tools, residents leave Teena's Place prepared to take on life's challenges. Additional details about these services is available by calling 214-859-0139.3

Eating disorders are one of the most common mental health issues among young women. In fact, of the estimated 11 million Americans who live with an eating disorder, 10 million are women. The Elisa Project seeks to raise awareness about this issue and provide educational resources so young women understand the tremendous impact of these disorders. Free support groups for individuals struggling to overcome their disorder are available throughout the Cedar Hill area. To inquire about these programs and services, call 214-369-5222.4

Current Initiatives

People with an untreated mental illness can find themselves involved in the criminal justice system. Once there, treatment services have historically been inadequate. To address these concerns, the Enhanced Mental Health Services Initiative was launched in 2002. As part of the initiative, local law enforcement agencies and mental health service providers teamed up to improve information sharing and streamline services to ensure individuals with mental health needs get the services they require. Additionally, the initiative sought to improve access to mental health services by individuals under community supervision. The result is a wraparound program that includes comprehensive case management, treatment and supervision that facilitates improved mental health.5
