My name is Tammer Malaty and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas.  I received my undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Houston.  Becoming a counselor was a very personal decision for me that started when I was a senior in high school.  As I grew older, my desire to work with the youth of this city grew more and more.  Being a young person in the city of Houston can be very overwhelming and sometimes people need help navigating those roads.  That was the case for me and I received a lot of help along the way..  My passion is working with adolescents, young adults, and young professionals.   In my opinion, the decisions made during those periods, will shape the rest of your life.  I specialize with issues dealing with substance abuse, depression, anxiety, and grief..  I also have a lot of experience in dealing with academic/ professional underperformance, behavioral issues, men’s issues, and self-esteem.
For the last 9 years I have worked as Counselor and Recovery Coach at Archway Academy, the largest sober high school in the United States, helping students earn an education while maintaining their sobriety .  For the last 3 years I have served as the Director in the Spring/ Woodlands area expanding the footprint of Archway Academy outside of the greater Houston area.
There are many great counselors in this great city, and you may be wondering what it is I can provide that is unique.  I have seen first hand what addiction can do families and communities alike.  I have dedicated my professional career to understanding and appreciating the magnitude of substance abuse and the effects it has.  I really do have a passion for our youth in this city.  I have seen too many people not realize their true potential and it breaks my heart.  I struggled a lot as a teen and young adult myself, and I received a lot of guidance along the way that shaped my understanding of the world today.  I have a way of connecting with teens and young adults that is done in a very respectful and comforting way.
My philosophy and approach to people are very simple.  I am not better, smarter, or more talented than you simply because I am the one offering counseling.  I want to enter into a relationship as equals.  That being said, I have studied many different approaches and I have found that there are a few I find to be the most effective for my clients.  I am a solution-focused therapist that incorporates cognitive behavioral along with mindfulness based techniques.  Our first couple of sessions we will be establishing a rapport and setting the foundation for what hopes to be a meaningful experience for the both of us.  A lot of the exercises that we learn are ones that need to practiced outside in the real world.  In my opinion, that is when the real changes start to happen.
One of the first things I had to realize as a young adult, is that change was possible for me.  If I can help make a change in your life, I would be honored to be a part of that.
