What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is sometimes called the “talking cure.” It is a process of understanding both the conscious and unconscious aspects of ourselves, and how these inner dynamics shape our emotional life and patterns of behaviour. Psychodynamic therapy means getting to the root cause of the issues you bring.

Together, we’ll talk about your life and what your body and mind are trying to tell you. Though you may come to therapy with specific problems or feelings, our goal is to make connections and discover the underlying patterns that are influencing you. This isn’t always easy, and it can take courage, but this process can lead to increased understanding of the forces shaping your inner life. Once this happens, you’ll create new possibilities for change. All those experiences and feelings that once felt overwhelming can become much more manageable, so that you have a sense of agency and control over your own life.

My role as your therapist is to offer a thoughtful space in which we can reflect on who you are, how you’ve come to be this way, and what may be asking for change. The kind of therapy I do is always a collaborative process: I listen carefully, but I also help you notice patterns, connections and moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed.

At the beginning of our work, we’ll spend time understanding what brings you to therapy, what you’re hoping for, and what has or hasn’t helped in the past. I’ll ask about you, your relationships, family history, and early experiences.

As our work deepens and trust develops, sessions become more open-ended and guided by what feels most pressing to you in the moment. Together, we follow your thoughts, feelings, and associations to better understand recurring emotional patterns, internal tensions or conflicts, and unspoken expectations that influence how you relate to yourself and others. I will offer both questions and observations to help bring these dynamics into your awareness.

A bit about me

I completed my training at the Centre for Training in Psychotherapy (CTP), an intensive program where the focus was on working with the unconscious parts of our selves; psychodynamic psychotherapy.  My clinical work is informed by an understanding of development, attachment and relational theories and an interest in neuropsychology.

Before training as a psychotherapist, I worked professionally as a musician. I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music from Queen’s University and an Artist Diploma from The Glenn Gould School of Music in Toronto. During that period, my own struggles with anxiety and feeling lost led me to undertake my own psychotherapy. That experience was pivotal: it deepened my understanding of myself and of relational dynamics, and it continues to inform the way I listen, think, and work with clients.
